Midweek Randoms

  • Last Wednesday I had a church meeting - to meet the new pastor joining us this summer. Before that meeting Kayla and I got supper. We don't get to chat much, so that was nice.
  • Thursday, we had my parents over for dinner. We had grilled porkchops marinated in the Tastefully Simple Honey Apple Grill Sauce. YUM! We also had sweet potatoes, applesauce, green beans, and dessert! =) Duh, dessert.
  • Friday, Dac and I met for a lunch date at the newer little asian place in town. I got a couple egg rolls and fried rice. Not bad.
  • Saturday we did stuff around the house. Dac did yard work and photos, while I cooked, clean, did laundry (all the usual suspects), went to the store, walked, and spent loads of much needed time with Reid. I wish more Saturdays could be like that... or better yet... weekdays!! =)
  • I've been fighting the good ol' allergies and sinus stuff again. I woke up Sunday in pretty bad shape so we skipped church. That afternoon and evening, Dac had soccer games. Reid and I went to the church later for the young adult thing we've started having there. We're about to start Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. I think it'll be good. Dac and I took the Crown Financial Bible study when we were engaged and it was really helpful in starting us out on the right foot and helping us get and stay (so far) debt free (aside from the house payment and occasional big medical bills). BUT a few lay-offs later, we're over-spending again and could use a refresher course.
  • Reid is a rolly polly these days. He's been working on mastering the roll and by golly, I think he's got it.
  • He's so proud of himself.
  • and happy... love getting these pictures while at work.
  • He is also sitting like a big boy these days.
  • I leave home with this each morning. It's annoying. Purse, pump bag, Reid's daycare bag, and my milk bag... plus his carseat with his little tank self in it. I get my arm workout at least! =)

  • My baby now sleeps on his belly. I fought it but here we are.

  • Trying to eat a little better... here's one meal this week: asian grilled salmon and sesame broccoli.
  • I made these tasty (and not quite as healthy) meatloaf muffins and mac-n-cheese muffins (tried to include a little spinach) to take for lunches this week.
  • Here's our first experience with a bountiful basket. Cori is considering establishing a site here in town. We got all of this for under $20.
  • I made some apple dip to go with the new fruits! Very tasty.
  • Reid enjoys his time at daycare. Here he is with his little buddy Eden. She adores him and I think he must kind of like her too. =)
  • Here he is chatting with Britton.
  • Another healthy meal: spinach and mushroom crustless quiche with a side of tomatoes.
  • This weekend, Reid and I went for a walk. We walked for about an hour (oh my goodness I'm so out of shape... not cool). We walked to Walgreens to get some Kleenex. I loved getting him out and he seemed to enjoy the ride. Hopefully there will be lots more strolls for us in the near future!
  • After supper last night and after everything was all cleaned up and ready for today, I had Reid playing on his play mat. He decided he wanted me to hold him (what a shame) and so I did. We watched Body of Proof with him just as content as could be sitting on my lap. I kind of loved it. Sure, the house may still need cleaned but I enjoyed my evening with the little man. News Flash, the house always needs cleaned. Give it up already. =)

Being Mama: hoo-rah for ta-ta milk

I've decided to start a little series on "being mama". These posts will cover some mama-type topics as I've experienced them - things like breastfeeding, cloth diapering, sleep training, etc...

----

Let me start out by saying that I'm writing this post for documentation purposes and if someone out there in the interwebs happens to find something helpful or encouraging from it, all the better. What I'm NOT trying to do is make someone feel doubt, guilt, hurt, or worse - judgement. Lord knows there's enough of that to go around in MomLand - you don't need it here too! =)

----

Before the last several years I never gave a whole lot of thought to even having a baby, let alone how I would feed one. I was formula fed - as were many kids from "that time" - and I turned out just fine. I didn't really know of anyone who breastfed until a few years ago. In fact, I even got defensive on one or two occasions when someone would dis formula. "Now just wait one minute - I was formula-fed and I turned out just fine, thank you very much!! My mom even - gasp - loves me!" Still, I hadn't given much thought to what I would do if/when the time came around.

Once Dac and I were married, when we'd talk about having kids, it would occasionally come up. He had been breastfed but didn't have super strong feelings about the subject either way, although I would say he was pro breastfeeding. I'm a researcher. A planner. A thinker. A worrier. A talk-it-out-er. As I began reading up on all things fertility, baby, and parenting - I studied the pros and cons to breastfeeding. You see, I'm stubborn. Sure I may play by the rules but I also have a bit of a rebellious streak. The fact that breastfeeding was the "only right thing to do if you love your child" made me want to run in the other direction just to show them! The more I read about it and thought it through, the more I realized it's what I wanted to do for a number of reasons - some of them being: strong immune system for baby, chocked full of vitamins, lower risk for certain problems for me, prolonged start of period and thus the endo and the pain that, for me, comes with it, cheaper, quicker weight loss (ha!), etc...

I'd read enough to know that not everyone is able to breastfeed and I felt comfortable going into it with an attitude of "this is my preference but I will not be devastated if it can't be done and I have to formula feed instead - there is nothing wrong with formula."

I still believe that and I have held tight to that as I've struggled through this wild, hard, exhausting stage - but like I said - breastfeeding has been my preferred method of feeding Reid.

So, on to our story!

It started the day he was born. I had an unplanned c-section and thus a longer wait time after delivery before we could give it a go. I was in a hospital that made breastfeeding a priority which was helpful but regardless, the baby can't just be laid on your chest right away to nurse. I got to briefly hold him in the operating room and got some skin-to-skin time once we were back in recovery but it wasn't until then that we got to try. All the nurses at that hospital are trained in that area and mine was helpful but wasn't particularly as gung-ho about it as I needed her to be. She helped me get him some-what latched and said that the skin-to-skin contact was the most important thing. She was also the first to tell me I had flat nipples (this was news to me) but that while that was making it more difficult for him to latch, it was possible to make it work. So I continued to try.

I feel like at this point its important to note that Reid was a strong little boy from, literally, day one. He held his head up on his own that first night. He was wild. I didn't know this wasn't the norm (not that there is really a norm when it comes to people) until over a week later when I went to the lactation clinic for the first time (God bless that place and the women there) and she said "Wow! He is a real hot mess... a wild animal!" It's true. He still is. It was hard for me to even hold him still. He was fairly big, squirmy, sweaty, and wild. He was starving but couldn't quite figure out how to eat. He would ravage and flail about always ending up unsatisfied. He even drinks from a bottle like a little maniac - collapsing and inverting the nippe (much like he did to me). He also had a super strong but incredibly messy suck. The power was there but the control wasn't.

He was wearing me out and tearing up my nipples. They were not only raw, they were black and blue, they had gum-bite marks, and hurt so bad I couldn't even bear to hold him close to me. It got that bad in just a day or two at the hospital... and this was with the help of nurses and lactation specialists! I tried nipple guards, creams (learned I have a bit of an allergy to the lanolin cream I had been slathering on by the half-gallon which just added to the pain by giving me a burning rash) various positions, and still he had a pitiful latch and I was crying in pain. Oh, and did I mention he was still hungry? Oh yes. We ended up having to give him formula by a cup while I tried desperately to pump some colostrum. (The sweet night nurse made the mistake of telling me if I pumped a little bit, she could use a dropper to suck it up and drop it in his mouth... I kept calling her in every five minutes to see if it was enough!)

I think it was our last day in the hospital that was the worst. One of the lactation ladies came to see me one last time. Reid still wasn't latching correctly and my boobs looked like a battlefield. She told me it was time to give it a break. Not time to give up, of course, but time to "rest" the girls by pumping and cup feeding instead of nursing - just temporarily. She warned that as bad as they looked, I could end up with permanent damage. I felt like a failure. I knew it wouldn't be comfortable or easy peasy but everyone said if I kept trying, it would happen, and it would stop hurting. I finally had to come to terms with the fact that pumping was not failing. It was just a necessary step in the process for us and I had to quit comparing myself to others. The goal was to breastfeed Reid and by pumping, I was doing just that.

I didn't have the discomfort you read about. I had excruciating pain that never let up and only got worse. It felt like my boobs were slammed in a car door repeatedly, rubbed vigorously with sand paper, splashed with acid, then punched... twice. They gave me a prescription antibiotic-type cream and sent me on my way telling me to try again in a couple days once the girls had healed up a bit. I was an emotional mess. The pain, the disappointment, and... hormones together were too much! It was rough. I cried a lot the next few weeks - almost always about breastfeeding. I dreaded it and quite frankly, hated it. I also felt like a total failure and a big weenie. I pumped for a couple days then went back to attempting to nurse while supplementing with more breast milk or formula in a cup.

The lactation ladies also pointed out that Reid had a bit of a tongue tie. It wasn't severe but was bad enough that it could be causing some problems with the latch. That, and  the fact it could cause problems down the road was enough for us to go ahead and have him seen by a specialist who clipped the frenulum (not nearly as scary as it sounds, thank goodness). It helped a tad bit but not really much. We continued to try different holds, various nipple guards, inverted nipple shells, ice, heat, massage, compresses... the works! Still, I was in pain and Reid was only getting a mediocre amount of milk from nursing.

After a couple more weeks, gallons of tears, and epic levels of exhaustion... Dac and I made an extremely hard decision. Reid was continuing to lose weight. We were taking him to the lactation clinic in Wichita and while we did make strides in the nursing department... it wasn't enough and his weight was getting too low for comfort. He was also pretty jaundiced. He was only nursing a teensy bit every now and then... the other times were total fails. It was getting to the point where he wouldn't really even drink from the cup. I think he was so hungry that he was too distraught to eat. We decided to supplement with formula from a bottle. We hadn't used a pacifier or bottle because we were trying to avoid nipple confusion. I had registered for and received some natural-style bottles that are supposed to be more like a breast, so the plan was to feed from a bottle while still trying to nurse. A couple days later we noticed a huge difference in Reid. He had clearly needed that nourishment and was a completely different baby. The poor thing had been starving =( Mom fail #1 (of many).

A couple days later my milk was in and I hoped it would make a difference with nursing. It didn't. The problems were with his latch. He was still a wild animal, was still thrashing about, and just couldn't get on and stay on like he should. I feared I was hurting him but the lactation consultants kept saying to just smash his little head in tight (in not quite such an abusive sounding manner...) and force him to open wide and keep his lips turned out. None of which he would do. Neither of us were getting any sleep because I was spending 30 minutes trying to get him latched, halfway feeding off and on for another few minutes before spending 30 to pump. Add in more time to wash pump parts and bottles... it was forever and a day before I could go back to sleep and that was just in time to do it all over again. I got to the point where it was hard to even function. He wasn't sleeping all that well either b/c he'd get so worked up trying to latch that it would be hard for him to settle down again. We decided at that time, after yet another visit to the lactation clinic, that I'd pump exclusively.  Just a week later, after exclusively pumping and supplementing with formula as needed which by that point, wasn't often, he was finally up over his birth weight! It was then we knew we made the right decision for us - at that time. My hope was always that we'd eventually get nursing figured out but it just didn't happen. I have heard about women who have successfully got their baby to nurse after several months - so maybe there's still hope for us! =)

More on my pumping experience to come!

A few lessons from my experience are:

  • Find people to encourage and help you - be it nurses, lactation consultants, family/friends, positive blogs, etc... I turned to all of the above. I needed to have my silly questions answered, I needed hands-on help, I needed to know it was hard, that I wasn't a weenie, and that it would probably get better - but that even if it didn't, it was ok to stop. It wasn't failing to stop. I also needed to know that exclusively pumping "counted" as breastfeeding and that I was giving my baby a gift in the best way I could.
  • Don't judge someone for breastfeeding or for not breastfeeding. People don't choose to breastfeed because they think they're better than a formula-feeder. They choose it out of preference and in trying to do what they think is best for their  baby. Also, not everyone pumps or formula feeds out of laziness or lack of care for their baby. For some, those options are truly best and are a way to be the best mom possible.
  • Formula is amazing. It saves lives and puts thighs on babies when mama can't.
  • Breastfeeding may be natural but it doesn't always come naturally.
  • If there's a next time, it could be different. There's always hope!

Mid-Week Randoms

Yep! You read that right. Mid-Week Randoms are back ya'll! =) I know you've missed them so. ha!
  • So here pretty recently Reid got released, at least temporarily, from physical therapy. We still have to work with him at home since he's not 100% yet but their part of the work was essentially done unless he doesn't continue to improve. After that last appt., Dac and I ran by Cuppa Joes for the first time to eat. It was ok but I'm afraid my heart belongs to College Hill instead. After that we went to watch Journey's soccer game. It was fun and she did great! It was such a nice day too - we loved being outside for a while.
  • Then, as I've already mentioned, we had Reid's 4-month appt. and shots. The weekend he turned 4-months he became an absolute bear. He had been kind of sick a about a week before that but then Easter Sunday rolled around and that afternoon it was nothing but screams. My usually super happy and sweet baby boy became...well... not so happy and sweet. =) He is still as stuffy as can be too. At this point I'm thinking it's got to be allergies. The good news is that I think all the fussing was due mostly to him going through a growth spurt and a developmental leap. He has literally been learning something new everyday. It's nuts. Things are starting to settle down again and he's getting back to himself. Whew!
  • Last week we went to Charli's soccer game. Hilarious! =) That age group is just funny to watch. That's all there is to it. She did good though and was definitely having fun. Here's Reid gearing up for the game - sportin' his Easter shades.
  • After the game we went to see GI Joe w/ Steve, Cori, and Val. The kids went to spend a couple hours with Aunt Darla and Uncle Darin.
  • Friday night we went out to eat and I think that's about it.
  • Saturday morning, we had a photo session in Wichita. We dropped Reid off with Terese, grabbed breakfast, and away we went. The session was nice and we took our time doing some shopping and eating lunch after. When we got back, we watched the WSU game.
  • Sunday, we went to church then Dac, Reid, and I went to Bricks for a late breakfast. It was good and nice to just BE for a little bit.
  • That afternoon I picked Sky up. She came over to hang out and do some cleaning for me to earn a little money. =) I enjoyed catching up with her and also enjoyed having clean floors when she left! I think Reid is going to be like Peety and think that Sky is just awesome. She loves them.

  • Monday night I had a board meeting but I stopped for Braums treats on my way home. I hate not getting to spend time with Reid on those nights.
  • BUT - yesterday, Dac worked until around 9 p.m. so I got to hang out with Reid. He was in the best mood and I absolutely loved that time with him! =) Here he was sitting in his high chair while I washed dishes. I can't get over how big he looks!!

  • Here we are at today. Today is April 10. It's been three years since I got the message that my cousin Ryan passed away. When I think about it, I still feel that gut-wrenching sickness I felt when I first heard. I try not to think about that part - but instead - think about him being totally and completely healed. He wouldn't want people moping around. That I know for sure. =) This year is a little more sad though as I continue to come to terms with the fact that Reid won't get to meet Ryan. Not here anyway. He was a pretty epic player in my life and it seems only fair that Reid get to know him too. He would love Ryan and Ryan would LOVE him. Lord knows all the crazy shenanigans (ganging up on mom) the two would take part in and all the probably somewhat inappropriate things Reid would learn from him. =) Thankfully there's stories. He will still know Ryan. Today we're wearing purple (that diaper's purple, it's just hard to see that in the picture) in memory of Ryan "Rufus" and in honor of  everyone affected in any way by Pancreatic Cancer. Oh - and for K-State since that's Ryan's team. =)

  • You may notice that Reid is grabbing his toes in that picture. He found them Sunday during his before church play time. =) I looked over and out of nowhere he was looking at and playing with his feet. He found them!
  • In other news, it's December-weather out there today. Lots of rain and sleet, etc... I say bring on the thunderstorms but keep the ice to Vanilla. Yes, I just did that. Anyway, on top of that, I get to work and Cori informs me I forgot his milk. MOM FAIL. I'm embarrassed to say how often this happens. The kid's gotta eat. You know - cuz he might waste away or something. =) So I trekked back out in that mess. The good news is there were donuts at work. holla!

Insta-Dump

Here's some recent Instagram shots as well as some random phone shots taken by me, Dac, or Cori in the past few weeks.

This one is pretty old but I like it.

Ssssshhhh, don't tell Austin but I snuck this one night when he was over.

Reid recently had another cold. Here he is hot, sick, and sleepy. =(

I may or may not have found all these on sale and bought them. I can't confirm nor deny.

Terese sells Tastefully Simple now. It's good stuff and I love their Beer Bread. I really like it made with cream soda though.

Cori got him this cute biker boy diaper for Easter. =)

After his 4-month shots... rockin' the Batman bandaids.

=)

Cori sent me this a while back. Love it.

Reid and his friends... innocently playing...

Then BAM!! And so it begins... total ladies man. =) We're gonna have to keep our eyes on these two!

I always send a couple extra outfits with Reid in the mornings but this was one of those days where he went through several. Here he is wearing one of the girls' zebra onesies. =) Annnnd rocking it I might add. =)

Reid is a stinker and will often times spit up the second you sit him in his carseat. Exhibit A.

I am so incredibly thankful for a happy, healthy boy. I had Cori send this to me yesterday b/c I was missing him.

Month 4

Hey buddy,

You sir, are getting cooler and more fun every day. I didn't even know it was possible to be more awesome than you already were. =) Your smile melts my heart and that laugh is contagious.

I miss you so much when we're apart - which, quite frankly - is far too much for my liking.

I can't get over how much you learn every day. You're constantly growing and learning something new. It is so much fun to watch! I can see you becoming more independent. I think you're too big for your own britches too. I can tell you want to do more than you currently can. No hurry, you'll get it and that determination is a great quality to have.

Your current favorite activities are snuggling with me (though you don't sit still for long these days), talking to us, laughing at your Dad being silly, being tickled, bath time, and putting everything in your mouth.

I can't wait to see what this next month brings.

Love you SO much,
Mama
  • You really love to giggle and belly laugh.
  • You've started doing more with your hands. You seem to like feeling different textures and have begun grasping better.
  • We dropped the swaddle, switched you to a sleep sack, and began sleep training routine-ing.
  • You started caring more about your pacifier.
  • You continued PT and chiropractor appt's and made huge improvements.
  • You finally rolled for me!!! =)
  • You took your first bath in the tub.
  • You wore primarily 3-6 and 6-9 month clothes.
  • You wore size 2 diapers.
  • You still have beautiful blue eyes.
  • You started batting at toys, grasping them, and pulling them to your mouth.
  • You drank 4.5oz bottles, then later 6oz - still breast milk.
  • You loved to look at yourself in the mirror.
  • You continued talking and even mimicked our sounds
  • We dropped your night feeding(s).
  • You, for all intensive purposes, slept through the night for the first time!
  • You got another little cold and sounded like Peety with your stuffy nose.
  • You really started to drool and chew
  • You weighed 17lbs at your 4-month appt, measured 26in, and your head was basically at the 100th percentile. =)

Easter 2013

This was taken at Dac's parents house when we celebrated Easter with them a week early. He got some cool shades and a hat from them - and some candy that I quickly scarfed down before he could miss it.

Looking rather dapper on a fine Easter morning.

Reid with his basket. He got all kinds of goodies. I got the "basket" itself from Thirty One Bags and got it to match his room so it can be used for toy storage now. I got him two limited edition Bum Genius diapers, a teether, keys, shorts, Dr. Seuss board book "All the Thinks You Can Think". He also got some cereal for when we start on that. I think he was pleased.

Here's a close shot of one of the diapers. Fun, no?

Here he is "hunting" eggs after church.

Terese picked these beauties up for him so I decided, against my better judgement... why not? =)

We went to Good Friday service (it may be morbid, but it's one of my most favorite services during the year - that and Christmas Eve). I have a slightly better feel this year for what it must have felt like for God to give up his son - have him killed. I still can't grasp it. Thankfully, I just need to believe it and be thankful for it - which I am. Saturday, Matt stopped by to say hey so that was fun. =) But of course we missed Kelly. =( We also had photos so Aunt Val came and watched Reid. Then we cooked out and watched WSU play.

Sunday, we skipped Sunrise Service even though we were up for it. But went to regular service before heading out to Grandma Millie's for a yummy lunch. Reid, again, "hunted" eggs and got some money for his piggy bank. He also got a fun outfit and toy from his Grandma and Grandpa.

Still catching up...

I realize I haven't even talked about Christmas yet but we're skipping ahead for now. Matt and Kelly were over for New Years. We went over to Matt's parents house for dinner then they came to our place to hang out for a while and pose with this guy.

The rest of these aren't necessarily in order. On this particular day, we had a photo session so Val came over and watched him. Dac just happened to take a few snaps when we got home.

Sky came to visit around Christmas too. It had been a long time since I'd seen her so that was a lot of fun.

Such a happy boy.

Back around 3-months before we stopped swaddling.

Sky and I again. This photo was used in a newspaper article about us.

=)

Bath time. He pretty well outgrew the sink quite a while back but we still use it, haha!

I. Die.

Fuzzy Head
