Reid is ONE!

Finally, here's some of Reid's 1-year photos. =)

This one was taken to display at his birthday party. He makes a cute little pup!
This is rockin' Danny Dino. This was his main gift from us. We also got him a pair of Stride Rite tennis shoes and some new big boy sippy cups. =)
This is just so Reid. He is constantly clapping these days.
It was kind of cold but we went outside for a few shots.

More clapping.
We have such a happy, happy boy. =)

Reid walks very well around walls and furniture, and as long as he's holding on to a push toy or our hands but he has yet to really walk on his own yet... although he did take a coupld quick wobbly steps between Dac and I over Thanksgiving.
This ranks right up there at the top of my favorites list.
=)

Such a big guy.

These aren't part of his 1-year session. I just snapped a couple in his Pistol Pete costume before the Bedlam game. Go Pokes!

Midweek Randoms

So, let's see here... you already know Reid had his 1-year appt. last week. He also continued to be cute. Just sayin'. =)

Friday, I had a meeting in Mulvane, then came back, picked Reid up from daycare, dropped him off at the house, picked up our bountiful basket, helped clean up, then went home and prepped the fruits and veggies. I also cleaned the kitchen and was down right 'zausted when I got done.

Saturday, holy mc'coldy. It was a whopping 6 degrees. We shot a family session that morning, then there was the big Bedlam game. I don't want to talk about it. Then, we went to Charli's birthday party that afternoon.

We love the Cowboys.

And will always be loyal and true.

Raisin' him right.

Sunday, Reid woke up and seemed kind of sick-ish. I had to sing in church that morning, plus, it was our week to read and light the candles for Advent, so we took him to church anyway and just tried to keep him away from the other kids.

Sunday afternoon, I went to Cori's Origami Owl party. Then these two played while I...

Made chicken-n-noodles. Clearly these were taken during the process and not of the final product. =)

And had hot chocolate.

TMI ALERT: Monday, I woke up with a weird, itchy rash on my neck. I know this picture doesn't really show it well, but it's the best I could do. I have no clue what caused it.

Dac stayed home with Reid while I went to work. Then, I had a long board meeting while it snowed.

Tuesday, Dac went to work and I stayed home with Reid. Of course I didn't like that he was sick, but I absolutely love being home with him - even when he's not on his A game. I was living the good life. =) Even though he didn't feel good, he managed to still flash a smile...

And make himself comfy while he played... (yes, the kid needs a haircut!!)

And get into everything...

We had leftovers for supper and Dac made us tasty, homemade hot chocolate. =)

About Me: my most embarrassing moment

In case you missed it, I recently started a little "About Me" series. I'm working through a list of things I want my kids to know about me. I thought it was sort of a cool getting-to-know-you project and would also be nice for this scrapbook that Reid will eventually look through.

Here's what I've done so far:
6. If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for?
7. What is your dream job and why?
8. What are 5 passions you have right now?
9. List 10 people who have influenced you and explain how.
10. Describe your most embarrassing moment.

Oh gee. There's a couple slight problems with this activity. One, I do embarrassing things like every other half second. Two, I don't really get all that embarrassed by much... which is probably why I continue to make a fool of myself on the regular. =)

After discussing with Dac... he helped me remember a particular shining moment in college.

Nope, not that. =) I shared an apartment with Beth and Julie. I was home alone one afternoon. I think I had a class canceled or something so there I was. It had suddenly turned cold that day so I decided to turn on our heat for the first time that fall. So I turned it on and went on to hop in some cozy PJ pants and a hoodie... and even threw some fuzzy socks on for good measure. =) Several minutes had passed and I started smelling smoke. I went into the front room and noticed what appeared to be some light smoke just starting to fill the room. You know me, the Safety Sally I am, I called 911 right away. I then crammed my fuzzy-sock-fattened feet into tennis shoes and headed downstairs to wait in my car until the fire department arrived. It was only a minute or two later they were there. They brought a smaller truck, a pick-up truck, and 3 of the great big trucks. Lights and sirens a'blarin'. You see, we lived in a big apartment complex - one with several buildings. I guess they thought, if one's on fire, this could be a big dang deal. I kid you not, just as those trucks were pulling in, I remembered I had turned on the heater and was probably just smelling that. =/ Cue bright red face and that awful guilty-embarrassed feeling inside. I got out and told the sweet older chief-like man the situation (by now, all my neighbors were outside gawking at me). He was nice as could be and said he'd have the guys check it out anyway. They did, and sure enough, it was just the heater smelling hot. The "smoke" was dust being blown out of the vent. Ay yi yi. He was seriously so sweet and none of the guys even laughed (in front of my face) and said the same thing happened to him the week before (yeah right!). =)

This reminds me of another embarrassing situation at the same apartment complex. Actually... two. Oy.

1) One night, we had just come back from visiting friends in OKC. It was late and dark and, let's face it, creepy outside. We saw a patrol car making its rounds around the apartment complex. We climbed up to our third floor apartment and we couldn't get the key to work. I'm not naming names Julie, but one of my roommates thought it felt like someone may have been on the other side of the door keeping us from turning the door knob. ;) I think I tried it next and had a total pansy freak out. SO - we high-tailed it back downstairs and hunted down the police officer. Again, he was so incredibly nice. He walked us back upstairs, got the door open, and (be still my beating heartI) even checked our rooms and closets. Nobody there. Of course.

2) I woke up one night to what sounded like something flying through the window of our living room. I called my roommates and Julie was kind enough (albeit not happy about it) to walk into the front room with me to see what/who it was. Ha! Turns out our Christmas wreath had fallen off the wall. Oops. =)

Yeah, they totally loved me. =) Here we are on the last day of our senior year. Yes, yes. Those are root beers.

And the morning of graduation.

10 things about my pregnancy

I'm sure many of you have seen the little facebook activity where someone lists some random facts about their pregnancies and then if you like or comment it, you're given a # to do the same. I got the # 8 but I'm going all out and giving 10. haha.

I don't typically participate in those things on facebook (even though I love reading other people's interesting tidbits on whatever the topic is) but I thought I'd share here. In this case I just know how hard it can be to see that what seems like absolutely everyone is or has been pregnant when you are wanting it so bad. I imagine the extra pregnancy posts on facebook could serve as an unwanted reminder to someone out there and I just don't want to chance that my post could make someone sad. =/ Maybe silly, I know. BUT, I in no way think that's bad to do. I think it's totally ok to share!!! =) Like I said, I love reading them and getting to know people better. This just isn't something I felt comfortable sharing on that platform.

I don't really feel like I have anything of extreme interest to share but here goes:

1) We chose not to find out the baby's gender until birth. I absolutely loved doing it that way. That's not to say there weren't a couple times I second guessed our choice (ie: choosing fabric) but hearing "it's a boy" in the operating room was so priceless.

2) We also waited to tell friends and family about the pregnancy until the end of the first trimester. We told our parents on Mother's Day. (Blog announcement HERE.)

3) I was seeing a fertility specialist when I became pregnant with Reid.

4) I craved different things at different times but never really had any "weird" cravings per se... it was all stuff I liked normally, I just wanted it a little more fiercely. =) I craved Jimmy Johns, McDonalds chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese (mostly just at first), and best of all, chocolate banana shakes. =) I also had a major aversion to meat (especially chicken) there for about a month or so.

5) I started growing and showing very early for it being my first pregnancy. I was SO excited to buy my first pair of maternity jeans. =) I wore them right away.

6) I had a subchorionic hemorrhage that caused a good scare and lots of pain but thankfully it dissolved on its own early on and didn't cause any other problems!

7) I got BIG and had lots and lots of swelling in my legs and feet. I also had epic heartburn. I had no idea how horrible that stuff could be!

8) We didn't have a name confirmed until the drive to the hospital.

9) We had a false-run to labor and delivery one night. It was embarrassing and we totally had that walk-of-shame moment out of the hospital during shift change. =)

10) My water broke at 3 a.m. on my due date - November 30. I labored (with an epidural that did very little good) until it became necessary for a C-section. Reid was born at 7:17 p.m. that day.

*BONUS* My least favorite part of the whole experience was that dang catheter. Ugh.

Quick Update

Reid had his 1-year appt. yesterday. Everyone that works there seems to love him. I'm sure they love all the babies that come through there but it still feels nice! =)

Anyway, he's doing well. They're not sure they got a real good reading on his height. It matched what they had for him last time and we're all pretty certain he's taller now. He weighed in at 24lbs and 7oz. His noggin is also still growing. Still above the 90th percentile. =)

We had been somewhat concerned about the possibility of an ear infection coming on but they were clear. We figure he must be pulling at the one ear because of molar-pain. Makes sense.

He got shots. It was sad but of course he did pretty well considering. We then went to refuel at Beiderman's before heading to the hospital for his lead screening (our home was built in 1920) and anemia screening. The nurse called this morning and said his anemia test was normal and they are still waiting the lead results.

He was a trooper for those tests... barely even flinched. It was snowing too. Just a random tidbit for ya. =)

By the time it was all said and done, Reid was one tired boy. He woke up happy this morning though and seems to be doing well.

We are so very fortunate. As we left the hospital, I thanked God for such a healthy boy. I also prayed for those families who have had a much rougher road than we have - that He would give them a little extra hope and comfort.

Thanksgiving 2013/Randoms

We clearly had a big week last week and I'm just now getting around to posting about Thanksgiving.

First up was lunch at my Grandma and Grandpa's house. We had a good time visiting, feeding our faces, and Reid is at an age where he really enjoys the other kids.

Reid with my Dad.

The feast

The part of the table I hang out by. =)

Then, it was off to Dac's parents' house for round two. We had delicious eats there too and I got to help feed Eden and Britton.

Charli helped Reid open a couple early birthday presents.

And the 'babies' took turns cruising around.

Reid's first Thanksgiving was a good one. He sampled a little bit of everything and we had a great time with our families.

Friday, I can't remember for sure what we did besides hang out and play around the house that morning. Then, after lunch, Val and I went to the church to decorate for Reid's party. We were gone, oh, I don't know, like FOUR hours or something ridiculous like that. Ha! We were streamered out but the party turned out pretty cute so I guess it was worth it. ;) I'll share pictures from that soon.

That evening we went out to eat with my parents. That was the first time I'd ordered something off the menu for Reid. Big boy. He had a sweet potato and my mom shared some of her green beans and chicken. When we got home I soaked up every bit of babyness I could. I held him while he drank his last bedtime bottle.

And cried while I read this book to him.

And gave him extra hugs and kisses before putting him to bed.

Then I watched Garth live on TV. =) LOVE Garth Brooks and he still has it!

The next day was wild and crazy. Reid turned one (sniffle) and we celebrated with a big party. I'm such a "small get-together" kind of girl but with two big families, that's harder than one might think. That's just all the more blessings, right? Right.

After his party, we went out to eat with Dac's family, then Reid went down for a looooong, much needed nap. When he woke up he made his way around the family room checking out his new treasures. =)

It looked a little something like this.

Needless to say everyone was beyond generous to him and he is mighty spoiled.

Sunday, we went to church. Cute, no?

He and Felicity even matched. =)

That night, we took his one-year photos and I'll share those soon too. Then, it was back to the grindstone. It was a great weekend I didn't want to see go. Monday, Reid had his first real breakfast before heading to Connie's. He enjoyed scrambled eggs and bananas.

The next day it was cheesy scrambled eggs and avocado.

I don't know why I insist on taking (and sharing) photos of him eating all the time, but I do. =) Last night we had to go to the store after work so I picked up a rotisserie chicken and that's just what this tired girl (and apparently this little guy) needed.

Annnnnd back to breakfast. This morning he was way serious about his hard boiled egg and kiwi. ;)

So yeah, breakfast has gone well and he's transitioned nicely all the way around. Sure, he's had a lot of eggs this week but I'm sure I'll get more creative eventually. =)

In other news, I've officially started my Christmas shopping! Gold star! =) I am not, however, decorating for Christmas this year. =( Next year though, look out!

Reid: Month 12

Reid,

You're officially ONE. You're my adorable, sweet, funny wild animal. You're my mover, my shaker, my belly-laugh maker. Sure, you're a curious, crazy (in the best way) toddler  but you're my baby... always will be. =)

I don't think anything has ever broken my heart, warmed it, and made it skip a beat quite like you. The chance to be your mom is an opportunity I am SO incredibly thankful for. That blessing is not lost on me. I get it. I am honored and humbled. I'm grateful I remember, even in the midst of a meltdown, this time flies so fast and every minute I get with you, no matter the activity, is a T-total blessing. (How many commas can I use in a sentence?)

Every phase we come to seems to be that much more fun than the one before. I certainly miss the sleepy snuggles but sharing my time with you is a blast now. You are so full of life. It's hard to be sad about the past when the present is so great. What's better is that while I haven't been a parent for long in the grand scheme of things, I've been at it long enough to know that everything has it's season. The (tantrums/sleepless nights/etc...) will end... even if just for a little bit... and better yet, the good always outweighs the bad. Cliche as it may be, you make everything worth it.

This past week has especially brought about many changes. You made the switch to whole cow's milk and stopped drinking from a bottle. You handled it like a champ. You began to eat breakfast before going to daycare each day. You still sleep well at night (most nights) and you continue to be a pretty laid back, easy going guy. You seem to know your routine so well that when it's broken, you're able to go with the flow then jump right back into it. You do not like to be told no. In fact, you generally respond one of two ways: continuing your activity (usually escaping or getting into something you're not suppose to) with an ornery grin on your face OR stopping in your tracks to have a total broken-feelings-meltdown complete with crocodile tears and the most pitiful pouty face I've ever seen. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. =)

I feel like I have much more to say but more than anything, I want you to know how much I love you. It's unconditional and it's forever. Thank you for making me a mom.

Love, Mama

Highlights:
  • You ate table food exclusively from the beginning of the month.
  • You continued saying "hi" and added a very cute "daddy" to the end of the phrase. Of course, you waved while saying it.
  • You stood unassisted early on but never for long.
  • You got 4 new teeth bringing your total to: 12 (with about 4 more to be making their appearance VERY soon)
  • You choked on watermelon.
  • You still wore size 4 diapers.
  • You wore 12-18, 18, and a couple 18-24 month clothes.
  • I started putting steroid cream on your real bad eczema spots. I wish I had used it much earlier.
  • You became a little pro with the sippy cup.
  • You started saying "yay" and clapping a lot. Oh how you loved to clap.
  • You took a a couple quick little steps between your Dad and I.
  • You took your first treats to daycare. I made graham cracker sandwiches (with frosting in between).
  • You became a lot more mobile and more confident with your steps as you cruised around furniture and walls.
  • You started drinking whole cow's milk mixed with your formula and eventually by itself.
  • You had your last bottle right before your birthday party (on your birthday) and switched to sippy cups of milk from there on out.
  • Speaking of party... you had your very first birthday party!! The theme was the book If You Give a Dog a Donut. We had it at the church and lots of your family was there! You absolutely LOVED the cake and probably would have ate the entire thing if we had let you.
  • You tried several new foods, probably too many for me to even remember.
  • You intently watched me take your shoes on and off and learned how to take them off yourself. ;)
  • You enjoyed "sharing" your pacifier, toy, sippy cup, etc... with someone only to take it right back.
  • You played more in the bath.
  • You celebrated your first Thanksgiving.
  • You spent plenty of time with family since your Dad and I had a lot of photo sessions.
